Heat Pumps in Arizona
Heat pumps in Arizona are a smart choice when electricity is your only energy source, because a single system provides both heating and cooling. Like air conditioners, heat pumps carry SEER/SEER2 and EER/EER2 efficiency ratings. They also carry an HSPF/HSPF2 rating, which measures heating performance specifically.
The Department of Energy sets a national minimum efficiency standard for heat pumps: 15.0 SEER / 14.3 SEER2, 11.7 EER2, and 8.8 HSPF / 7.5 HSPF2. This standard applies across the United States, so it is a useful baseline. The higher a system’s SEER/SEER2 and HSPF/HSPF2 ratings climb above that minimum, the more you save on energy costs.
SEER/SEER2 and HSPF/HSPF2 Explained
SEER2 is an updated rating standard from the DOE. Older SEER ratings were tested under precise, ideal lab conditions. SEER2 uses updated testing methods instead, so it gives a more realistic picture of how a heat pump performs in an actual Arizona home.
HSPF2 works the same way for heating. It is the newest version of the HSPF scale, and it expands on that original rating system.
Think of SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 like miles per gallon for a car: the higher the number, the more efficient the unit. Just make sure you compare ratings the same way SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2 (and the same for EER/EER2 and HSPF/HSPF2) otherwise the comparison is not accurate.
EER2 Versus SEER2
EER2 and SEER2 both measure an air conditioner’s energy efficiency, but each looks at a different set of conditions:
- EER2 measures efficiency at a single peak cooling temperature of 95°F.
- SEER2 measures efficiency across a full cooling season, with temperatures ranging from 65°F to 104°F closer to a real Arizona summer.
