The Department of Energy sets minimum efficiency standards by region, so the right AC unit for your home depends on where you live.

SEER Versus SEER2
SEER2 is an updated rating standard from the DOE. Older SEER ratings were tested under precise, ideal lab conditions. SEER2 uses updated testing methods instead, so it gives a more realistic picture of how an air conditioner performs in an actual Arizona home.
Think of SEER/SEER2 and EER/EER2 like miles per gallon for a car: the higher the number, the more efficient the unit. Just make sure you compare ratings the same way SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2 (and the same for EER/EER2) otherwise the comparison is not accurate.
EER2 Versus SEER2
EER2 and SEER2 both measure an air conditioner’s energy efficiency, but each looks at a different set of conditions:
- EER2 measures efficiency at a single peak cooling temperature of 95°F.
- SEER2 measures efficiency across a full cooling season, with temperatures ranging from 65°F to 104°F closer to a real Arizona summer.
